Sometimes it's the little things that we overlook that cause the problems that seem to have come out of nowhere.
This happens a lot with how you take care of your skin. You wake up one morning and a pimple is right there front, red and center on your chin. Where the fuck did that come from?! It sure wasn't there the day before...oh it was there sweetheart, it just decided to make a grand entrance in the middle of the night as you slobbered all over yourself after not having brushed your teeth before going to bed.
What?! Since when is not brushing your teeth cause pimples?
Darling, since forever.
Have you smelled something you ate stuck in your teeth a few hours later and almost gagged at how much it stank? That's bacteria baby. And that same bacteria marinating in your drool that caused that pimple to have a coming out party.
Here are a few things to regularly check:
1. Your face sponges.
When that shit turns the slightest bit dirty brown, replace them. Or wash them. I don't care what you do, just don't put it on your face again as it is. These things are pretty cheap but if you use them often enough, go ahead and wash them. These bad boys absorb all the gunk and oil on your face all day long, it makes sense that they get dirty quick. So make it a habit to regularly replace or wash them.
2. Your teeth.
As mentioned above, make sure you brush your teeth before going to bed. I know it's not the most attractive thing to admit, but we all slobber here and there when we're in bed, especially after a particularly busy day or a long night drinking and partying. Have you never, ever, woken up with a damp spot on your pillow?! If not, well then, consider yourself lucky. Or a hypocrite. It's either one or the other.
3. Your makeup brushes.
Same as the face sponges, make sure you clean or replace your makeup brushes. That shit carries a ton of residue that will irritate your skin and cause breakouts. It's so easy to clean them. Just squirt a dollop of your shampoo in a glass of water and dip your brushes. Leave them for about 15 minutes, rinse and let them dry on a paper towel. Boom! Done!
4. Your sheets.
Don't be one of those people who wash their sheets once a month. That shit is nasty. Wash them at least every 2 weeks or if your eyes are still wide open in shock - ok, at least wash your pillow covers every 2 weeks. See item number 2. We slobber in our sleep. Just trust me, you do. And then what happens? It dries up and you pretend nothing happened. But those bacteria are waiting on your pillow covers ready to jump on your freshly washed face next time you go to bed.
5. Your towels.
Wash them after every 3 uses at the most. Just because they dry out doesn't mean they're still clean.
6. Your sleeping habits.
Do you get enough hours of sleep? If 8 can't be achieved, aim for 6. But you need to stay within this range. If not, it will inevitably show on your skin. It may not be tomorrow but it will show up soon enough.
7. What you eat.
You already know this. Crap makes crappy skin and fruits, veggies and whole foods make it look youthful and more supple. Skip the supplements. Get it straight from the source.
